Azadirachtin, biological and effective insecticide

L'azadirachtinis one of the active substances contained inneem oil, the biological insecticide par excellence. Extracted from the seeds of the Neem tree, theazadirachtinit is widely used in organic and biodynamic agriculture.

We have already talked about the use of the tree ofneem as a natural insecticideexplaining to you that part of the power ofneem oil is dictated by the presence ofazadirachtin, one of its most powerful active ingredients.

L'azadirachtinit acts with different mechanisms, on the one hand it acts as a repellent and on the other it stops the development of the parasite that is perishing in its larval state without being able to conclude its biological cycle (therefore, without being able to reproduce!).

  • It acts on the larval stage of the parasite

In detail, theazadirachtinit interferes with post-embryonic development as a growth regulator: it inhibits metamorphosis by blocking the moult and preventing the synthesis of ecdysone. As is clear, theazadirachtinit does not have a killing effect on the insect: it does not kill the parasite directly but prevents its procreation.

  • It acts on the adult parasite

As stated, theazadirachtinacts as a phagorepellent: it reduces the stimulus to nutrition and negatively affects the reproductive capacity of the adult parasite and reduces the fertility of the eggs.

  • It acts on the plant

Among the most appreciated properties ofazadirachtinthe proven systemic activity appears (it manages to penetrate inside the tissues of the plant, spreading in all its parts through the lymph); the systemic activity is carried out only when this natural insecticide is absorbed by the root system of the plant. It performs a translaminar action managing to penetrate inside the plant tissues.

Treatments based on azadirachtin

L'azadirachtinit is very effective against the gray apple aphid, the pear aphid and the American thrips. If you notice the classic damage to grapes caused by the American thrips, you can perform 2 or 3 treatments based on azadirachtin by administering the product 6-7 days later, starting the first treatment when the first mobile forms of the parasite appear.

Azadirachtin: crops on which it can be used

L'azadirachtinit cannot be used indiscriminately on all crops. The list below shows the most common crops on which this natural pesticide can be used.

L'azadirachtinit is used in various commercial formulations, at the time of purchase make sure you choose an authorized product in accordance with current EU and national legislation.

If you are looking for natural insecticides based on azadirachtin, I recommend the commercial productNeemazal, allowed in organic farming and offered on Amazon at 19.90 euros with free shipping. Do not be fooled by the high price, it is a concentrated product so 2 ml is enough to produce a liter of water for the natural treatment of your crops.

Being the biological insecticide the safety times to pass between the last treatment and the harvest are very short. It is advisable to respect a safety time of 7 days before picking the nuts (chestnuts, almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts), while for all other garden products (vegetables, fruit and vegetables) 3 days are enough.

Azadirachtin against mosquitoes

How many of you have to face constant heat and mosquitoes during the summer?

Also in this case there is an excellent natural remedy, namely azadirachtin.

As previously mentioned, one of the most powerful active ingredients in neem oil is azadirachtin which has a repellent effect against mosquitoes.

To obtain this effect, it is sufficient to have the neem tree from the moment in which the azadirachtin is present in all its components (roots, flowers, leaves, bark and wood).

If you do not have the necessary space to have the neem tree, you must not worry at all, you can also hold and burn the leaves which, releasing the azadirachtin, keep mosquitoes away.
