When to turn on the heat

When to turn on the heating: switching on periods and times based on the climatic zone of the Municipality where the property is located.
With the approach of the cold with a consequent drop in temperatures, the need to turn on the heating of the house arises. For those who live in a condominium with centralized heating, must they submit to specific periods and times to turn on the radiators?

The switching on of the central heating changes according to the climatic zone of the municipality where the apartment is located. According to the provisions of Decree no. 412/1993, all Italian municipalities are divided into six climatic zones in relevance to the geographical location. The switch-on dates are set by law to help save electricity and gas.

The climatic zones of the Municipalities are marked with letters ranging from A to F: they indicate the date of switching on and off of the central heating but also the maximum number of hours per day in which the switching on of the systems is allowed.
More spaces are granted to the northernmost areas or to the inland areas distant from the sea. For example, zone A concerns the extreme south while zone F concerns the coldest provinces of northern Italy such as Cuneo and Belluno.

  • The boiler cannot be switched on before 05:00 in the morning and it cannot exceed 23:00.
  • In the case of special occasions, when for example exceptional conditions occur from a meteorological point of view, the mayors can extend or reduce the annual periods of ignition of the heating, the same applies to the maximum duration of ignition.
  • The maximum temperature expected for home heating systems is 20 ° C but it can be increased for special needs by an additional 2 degrees.

How to save on heating, useful tips

A myth to dispel: the time slots

Many Italians think that you can save on heating with the time slots but this is absolutely not true. If the heating is turned off when no one is at home, and therefore for several hours a day, there could be savings, but this procedure cannot be referred to as a "time slot".
Gas is not paid for hourly bands, unlike electricity which, depending on the operators, can be managed according to two-hourly rates.
The supply of natural gas has a single cost valid for all hours of the day and night since the price to pay for the standard cubic meter is the same.

Thermostatic valves

A simple precaution that we can take is to take advantage of the thermostatic valves: in this way we will be able to regulate the temperature of the rooms and avoid the automatic switching on of the radiators in unused or temporarily unoccupied rooms: there will be a saving of 7% per year. These devices are included in the 50% tax deduction until 31 December 2016 for those who implement energy saving measures.

PLEASE NOTE: to prevent high fines as well as very high bills, it is good to know that the decree law 102/2014, in implementation of the 2012/27 / EU directive on energy efficiency, requires the installation of thermostatic valves in public and private buildings with central heating .
