How to do multiplication of hydrangeas for cuttings?

  1. - The choice of the plant
Choose a mother plant that is healthy and robust with the characteristics you desire.
  2. - The choice of branch
Take a sprig selected from those without flowers. The sprig will need to prune 2 or 3 leaves. The branch should be taken between the medium-low branches of the plant, among the most woody ones to make a woody cutting, among the greenest ones to make a herbaceous cutting.
  3. - Length of the hydrangea cutting
To make it easier to take root, take a sprig at the foot of the mother plant, 10-15 cm long.
  4. - Cutting
The sprig will be your cutting and must be cut with a sharp incision, with a very sharp blade. The cut can be oblique to increase the rooting surface.
  5. - Leaves
Eliminate the leaves present at the base of the branch.
  6. - The rooting substrate
Insert the engraved area in a sandy substrate enriched with rhizogenic powder or a good rooting to allow the growth of the roots and accelerate the rooting process.
  7. - Water supply
Water the cutting constantly and keep it in a moderately sunny place. The substrate should be kept moist by administering water, in small doses, twice a day. The substrate must be moist but free from stagnation, so we recommend using a sprayer.
  8. - Rooting
The first roots will appear after about 40-50 days. Only after rooting will it be necessary to transplant the cuttings into larger pots.
  9. - The planting
If planting involves placing the plant in a pot, fill it with sand, soil and peat. The pot will be placed in an area protected from the sun, wind and frost.
  10. – Repotting
For repotting, if necessary, wait for next spring.
  11. – Irrigate the already rooted cutting
The young cuttings should be irrigated regularly, especially in the warmer months, using rainwater left to "rest". Rainwater is free of limestone and tends to acidify the soil.
