Fertilization before sowing

Fertilize the soil before sowing, the most suitable fertilizer is manure. Alternatively, add a compound fertilizer that provides all the nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sulfur and boron. A balanced supply of these elements is provided by the organic granular fertilizer (100% natural) Biostark. In soils with low fertility, add 50 grams of this fertilizer for every square meter of cultivated area.

A package of this fertilizer, on Amazon, can be bought with € 15.90 and is enough to fertilize 200 square meters of medium fertility soil (providing 40 grams of fertilizer per square meter). For all the info, I refer you to the Amazon page:biostark organic fertilizer

Alternatively, buy any organic granular fertilizer that brings the elements mentioned above. Avoid liquid fertilizers and avoid growing garlic for several years in a row in the same plot of land, you could facilitate the development of nematodes harmful to the lily.

Garlic, onion, shallot, spring onion, leek ... they should never be grown for several years in a row in the same plot of land, both to avoid the proliferation of specific parasites in the soil, and not to impoverish the soil. This is why the rotation of the garden is important!

To preserve the fertility of the soil you can rotate between garlic and crucifers (radish, turnip, cabbage ...), garlic and composites (radicchio, salad, chicory ...) or garlic and cucurbits (courgette, melon, cucumber ...).

How to grow garlic

Plant the bulbs in the ground, making sure to place them in rows at a distance of about 15 cm from each other and at a depth of 5 cm. When choosing garlic to grow, possibly avoid those treated with chemicals.

The cloves must be buried with the tip facing upwards.

Prefer a light, fertile and well-drained soil: if it's clayey it's not good! In case ofcultivationin the ground, do a preliminary preparation of the soil: the soil must be soft to allow the bulbs to swell.

For thecultivation of garlic in pots, you should choose bins at least 40 cm deep.

Mulch planted bulbs, preferring hay compost, dry leaves, straw, compost, manure or well-rotted cut grass

Avoid irrigation: for autumn and winter crops, rainwater will suffice unless there is drought. For late cultivation or in case of drought, it will be necessary to water in moderation, because garlic does not react well with moist soil. Keep these notes in mind also in case ofcultivation of garlic in pots.

Natural remedies based on garlic

Garlic is considered a good one natural remedyfor thecareof the vegetable garden. In the fight against pests and plant diseases, a garlic macerate is very useful.

The garlic macerate has a repellent action against many phytophagous insects therefore it can be used to protect vegetables and ornamental plants without side effects. Due to the presence of allicin (a sulfur-based compound which, incidentally, is the one that causes bad breath!), It is effective against mites, aphids and moths and also hinders the spread of downy mildew.

For the preparation of a natural repellent based on garlic.

  1. Leave 100 grams of garlic bulbs to macerate for a day.
  2. Once this is done, add 10 liters of water.
  3. Filter the solution obtained and vaporize it on the plants.
