The marine plywood represents one of the wood-based materials with exceptional durability. Warning! We said "Wood-based material" but marine plywood is not as natural as it seems.
We can certainly say that the marine plywood it is among the finest and most durable wood-based materials and its characteristics undoubtedly make it particularly suitable for setting up furnishings and components for boating, especially when it comes to pleasure boats;
the marine plywoodit is also useful for the construction sector, especially for applications in very humid environments, in the presence of salts or chlorine.
The advantages of the marine plywood:
- It has excellent durability even in environments with a high degree of humidity and salinity.
- It can boast a low weight and high mechanical characteristics.
- The price of the marine plywood it is quite contained even if superior to the classic plywood.
- Just like the plywoodtraditional, even themarine plywoodit is very easy to work with.
Marine plywood, disadvantages
Among its main disadvantages we see the type of gluing. Although in accordance with EN 314 Class 3, it is a phenolic bonding, not suitable for use in closed and inhabited places and above all not suitable for those who care about the environment.
The marine plywood it may have a bonding guaranteed by the use of melamine-based resins; melamine is indicated in the risk sheets as dangerous if ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin and is not ecological at all.
In the description of the type of bonding, the user can read the terms "phenol-formaldehyde" or can hear about marine plywood made with thermosetting resins . In reality it is always a wood-based material made so resistant thanks to the products they release formaldehyde therefore, the use of the marine plywood it is recommended only for use in confined environments such as to favor the release of formaldehyde.
In July 2003, a law came into force in Japan that severely restricts the presence of toxic substances (including formaldehyde) in homes. In the United States, too, the formaldehyde threshold allowed for the production of wood products and furniture has been lowered. Italy has also recently moved in this direction:
since December 2008, the placing on the market of wood-based panels, semi-finished and finished products with emissions of formaldehyde higher than those established for class E1, as defined in the UNI EN 13986 standard.
When purchasing any panel containing marine plywood, check the manufacturer and the attached certifications.
How much does marine plywood cost
Thepriceof themarine plywoodit may vary according to durability, to the E class it belongs to, to the manufacturer and to the type of wood of origin used. As an indication, we can say that theprice of marine plywoodwith the essence of okumè wood, it varies from 9 to 27 euros per square meter, passing from 10mm to 30mm thickness. A phenolic okumè panel with dimensions of 250cmx200cm and a thickness of 30cm can be sold for around 120-150 euros.
