Some appliances such as an iron, washing machine, etc. they can be attacked by limestone, compromising their functioning. The same problem occurs on the tiles, sinks, taps and shower cubicles (see how to eliminate limescale in the bathroom), creating large deposits that are ugly to behold!
To combat limescale, we can have a water softener connected to the water system but in the absence of this, we can only prevent its formation with alternative solutions. Various descaling products are available on the market but they are harmful to the environment! For this purpose, natural remedies are very effective; vinegar, sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, for example, are ingredients that can effectively fight limescale! On the contrary, they produce a much higher cleaning and brilliance of surfaces than that obtained with chemical detergents.
Do-it-yourself descaling remedies, preparation and application
The most common natural descaler is vinegar; it is also perfect for the most delicate materials, such as marble, since not only does it not affect them but makes them particularly brilliant.
Its action is also effective on the glass and on the internal surfaces of the refrigerator and oven, as well as on the hobs. It is also an excellent rinse aid for dishwashers. However, its use is not recommended on some surfaces such as copper and brass.
To prepare the do-it-yourself limescale remover, simply dissolve the vinegar in a bowl, to the extent of 100 ml for every 300 ml of hot water, adding 1 tablespoon of salt in case of large deposits. Once next, rinse with warm water. If the vinegar smell is too pungent, you can leave the windows open for a few minutes; the smell will disappear.
DIY descaling remedies for the washing machine
To eliminate and prevent limescale inside the washing machine, just pour a liter of vinegar into the empty drum and run a long washing program at a temperature of 70 degrees. This should be done at least once a month. During normal washing of garments, it is also advisable to pour at least one hundred ml of vinegar into the softener compartment
In this way, we will have a powerful descaling action and at the same time strengthen the washing action of the normal detergent. Be careful not to mix the detergent with the vinegar, given that the mixture has been prepared, apply it with a soft sponge on the surfaces affected by the limestone and then leave it to act for a few minutes.
that the acid action of the vinegar and the basic action of the detergent would cancel each other out.
DIY descaling remedies with baking soda
To clean the surfaces we can use sodium bicarbonate: just dissolve a spoon in half a liter of water and 100 ml of white vinegar. Once the mixture has been prepared, apply it with the sponge on the affected surfaces and remove with warm water.
In the case of large deposits, citric acid is very effective; it is available in natural powder to dissolve in water; about 200 grams in a liter of water are enough.
Once dissolved, apply with the sponge and leave for a few minutes. Always rinse with warm water. Avoid using citric acid on delicate surfaces such as marble, wood and terracotta
