Radiators do not heat, what to do

What to do if the radiators do not heat updomestic environments. Practical and do-it-yourself tips to improve your home heating system.

When the cold is felt there is a need for heat the houseefficiently and without wasting precious energy. To improve comfort inside the four walls, the first thing to do is aim for thermal insulation.

A well-insulated house is the first guarantee to save on the gas bill and on the electricity costs associated with summer cooling. How long have you not worked on the masonry and replaced the fixtures? The building envelope, if very damp, will make the work of theradiatorsand so these could be ineffective, even if they burn a lot of methane!

In certain circumstances i radiatorsthey may not work at their maximum efficiency. In this regard we illustrate what to do if the radiators do not heat up as they should. With a few tricks you will have a warmer house and you will be able to face the winter better.

The radiators heat up halfway

It may happen that while lighting the boiler correctly, i heatersarranged in the various rooms do not heat up and remain cold, lukewarm or only half-heated.

When iradiators only heat up halfway, that is, when part of the heater remains cold or lukewarm and only the lower part is hot, don't worry! This circumstances is completely normal. If you have set a certain temperature when the thermostatrecords that that temperature has been reached, communicates it to the boiler which begins to deliver less power. In these circumstances, it is normal to see that only the lower part of the radiator (or only the upper part) remains hot while the rest is cold. This is a completely normal mechanism to allow constant heating of the rooms.

If the set temperature has not been reached and the radiator is only half hot, there may be problems with the thermostat.

THE radiators do not heat up, what to do

First, make sure that you have turned on the boiler's heating timer and that you have set the temperature value for heating correctly. It is good to remember that the temperature for domestic heating is set separately from that for water heating. That said, set the heating temperature to around 60 ° C.

Wait about half an hour, to give the hot water time to circulate in the radiators and then to heat the plates.

Boiler pressure too low or too high, what to do

If they do not heat up anyway, go back to your boiler and check the system water pressure through the pressure needle. If it is less than 2 bar, look for the water pressure lever, which should be located in the lower part of the boiler.

Open the lever slightly, until you see no more than 2 bar of pressure: do not forget to close the lever as soon as the pressure of 2 bar is reached.

If due to an anomaly, excessive pressure occurs (the pressure needle is at maximum), look for the tap that you find under the boiler. Generally it is a red tap, it is used to release the water pressure.

At this point, open the tap, paying attention to the pressure of the boiling water, in this way you will immediately see the pressure needle drop.

How to bleed the radiators

An inconvenience that often occurs is that of the formation of air bubbles inside the pipes and radiators. To prevent the radiators from heating up, it is advisable to vent the radiators periodically.

If the radiator plates do not heat up and continue to be cold, get an empty glass and open the vent valve on each radiator

Let the air and water out and after a few seconds you will feel the plates heat up: repeat the operation for all the plates that do not heat.

During this procedure, be careful to always check the water pressure: it must be constant at 2 bar, however, during the vent radiatorsthe pressure could drop and therefore must be adjusted by opening the water key as described in the previous paragraph. If you have never run itventing of the radiators, follow the instructions in the guidehow to bleed the radiators: how to remove the air from radiators.

If, after all this procedure, the radiators still do not heat up, it will be necessary to consult the boiler technician.

What to do if the radiators do not heat the house

If the radiator plates doheat upbut the heat produced is not enough, you probably live in a house rich in heat loss. As specified in the introduction, insulation is the winning weapon for a house that consumes little and guarantees maximum home comfort.

In some circumstances the radiators are unable to heat the house, this occurs when:

  • the house is rich in heat loss
  • the radiator is installed close to a damp wall that overlooks the outside of the house
  • the radiator is installed near a window

In these circumstances, to increase the efficiency of the radiators, a reflective panel can be installed. This is a small do-it-yourself intervention that can be right for you and improve the heating of your radiators.

For this do-it-yourself, all you have to do is install heat-reflecting panels behind the radiators. This trick will help you increase the amount of heat distributed in the room.

The radiators radiate heat both front and rear. The heat spread behind is almost wasted, especially when it comes to perimeter walls, near windows or worse, damp walls.

Among the various reflective panels, I point out thoseRadflex because they are installed by gluing, they can be easily removed and they do their job well.

These heat reflective panels are easily found on the market, in plumbing and plumbing shops or do it yourself. On Amazon, they can be bought at a price of 26.51 euros with free shipping costs. From personal experience I point out that these "seasonal" products (which are only served in winter) have a price that can fluctuate a lot during the year! The cost specified is for the pack of three.

For every information:Radflex, heat reflective panels.

We have reported these reflective panels to you because for do-it-yourself installation it is not necessary to disassemble the radiators, however feel free to choose the model you prefer, taking into account your needs.
