How to insulate the roof and save

How to insulate the roof to save and live better? The roof protects from the rain, but not only. This fundamental part of the building is also important for thethermal insulation, both from heat and from cold. In winter, a roof without insulation disperses the heat of the house, in summer it transforms it into an unlivable oven. Yet it is not difficult to have a good roof.

Insulate the roof in fact it is quite simple, it is more a question of identifying the solution that best suits the needs and the situation. Speaking of existing buildings (on new buildings we try to take for granted the existence of a good one thermal insulation) the first thing to check is that an insulating layer exists and that it is not damaged.

The insulation must be dry, not torn, cover the entire surface and have no gaps in thickness. If there are defects, and even more so if there is no thermal insulation in the roof, it is advisable to intervene soon. The investment will be repaid by the savings in the bill and the living comfort will be much better. Now it is a question of studying the intervention.

How to insulate the roof with an impracticable attic

Here the best thing is to lay an insulating layer on the floor of the attic, which is very simple and which can also be done alone. Putting the insulation under the tiles would be inconvenient since the attic is not viable and would only serve to heat an empty attic by stealing heat from the housing below.

As for the choice of insulation, the simplest products to lay are mats (sheep's wool, rock wool, glass wool ...) or loose cork in granules. Rigid wood fiber and cork panels are fine, but they need to be shaped and should be topped with another insulating layer so as not to leave the joints free.

How to insulate the roof with a practicable attic

If the floor is practicable, and you do not want to completely dismantle the roof, it can be insulated from the inside by fixing an insulating layer parallel to the slope of the roof. In this way, the attic will retain the heat coming from below and will be more sheltered from the sun. For an intervention of this type, if the attic is for the exclusive use of the tenant on the top floor, the authorization of the condominium assembly is not required.

Rigid panels (wood fiber, cork, polystyrene ...) to be glued or nailed on the soffit are suitable for this intervention. And if it is a wooden roof, the space between the beams can be filled with a soft insulation such as wool or fiber.

How to insulate the roof where an attic is planned

Normally the attic is something more than a viable attic, and can also be a separate housing unit. If you want to create one with a good living comfort, the best thing is to lay the insulation outside, under the tiles, so as to have a more performing solution and not reduce the usable area. The insulating layer can be laid over the beams or between the beams, but in both cases it is mandatory to contact a company and the intervention involves some inconvenience. To intervene on a common roof requires the authorization of the assembly.

The most suitable insulators for the creation of a 'warm roof' (i.e. insulated at the level of the roof) are wood and cork fiber panels for a 'green' solution, or polystyrene and the like if you want to contain a little shopping. If the insulation is placed between the beams, good results are also achieved with loose cork in granules and cellulose fiber (very cheap) which, however, must be surmounted by another insulating layer and perfectly protected from moisture.
