To celebrate the World Environment Day 2015 of 5 June there was no better place than EXPO Milan. Six months as the world capital of land protection and sustainable development offer a visibility advantage that must be exploited. And so it is from here, as is right, that the world proclaims the theme of this edition of the World Environment Day: 'Seven billion dreams. One planet. Consume with care '. Clear, precise message, there is no need to add anything else.
Objective of the World Environment Day 2015 is to sensitize all the inhabitants of the planet to review lifestyles and behaviors. Actions that are indispensable and cannot be postponed if we want to reduce the negative impact of humanity on the natural resources available. For Italy, the planetary megaphone of this cry for help, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella takes the field, as a guest on 5 June in the pavilions of the EXPO. With him also the Minister of the Environment Gian Luca Gallettti, already at the EXPO on June 4 for the presentation, and the Minister of Agricultural and Forestry Policies Maurizio Martina.
There World Environment Day, World Environmental Day, was established in 1972 by the United Nations and is celebrated every year on June 5th. Each year the theme changes (in 2014 the focus was on climate change and the advancement of water) and the main venue of the event also changes, which this year is Italy with the Milan Universal Exposition and its theme in in line with the WED 2015: feeding the planet, energies for life.
Presenting the World Environment Day 2015, Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), recalled that one third of the food produced each year in the world is not consumed, and this is one of the facts that reflect the very serious problems of our time. Minister Galletti instead turned his gaze to Paris, where the COP21 climate conference will be held from 30 November to 11 December 2015.
In the program of the 5th June of EXPO there are several moments that recall the World Environment Day. After the official visit of President Mattarella at noon, in the afternoon the award ceremony of the Towards a Sustainable Expo competition for best sustainable practices among all the participants in the world exhibition. Then the Terra Italia forum on sustainable innovation of mountain and rural communities within the Biomediterranean cluster. Meanwhile it continues from Mountain Week, from 4 to 11 June, which this year has been chosen to organize within the EXPO.
